Apple time capsule raid. The Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro offers a variety of shortcuts according to each application, but sometimes it doesn't work as expected. Users may eventually experience unexpected behaviors with it such as freezes or specific buttons not responding.

If this has happened to you, be aware that you can fix it without having to restart your Mac, so follow along for how to fix the Touch Bar when it stops working.

Expand the Touch Bar node and configure the controls for corresponding contexts and modifier keys. The Touch Bar node is available only if you are using an Apple MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. Apply changes when finished. To show the function keys (F1, F2, and so on) on the Touch Bar, hold down the Fn key. You don't need to download any special software or anything like that. Instead, all you have to do is open the Terminal app, which comes preinstalled on your Mac.

You can find the Terminal app by searching for it with Spotlight or also in Finder > Applications > Utilities folder.

With the Terminal open, you must type the following commands:

sudo pkill TouchBarServer;

You can either type them in or copy and paste both commands together. Press the Return key to continue. The result will be something like this:

Terminal requires your password to complete the process and restart anything related to Touch Bar. It's normal to not see the characters on the screen while you're typing, so just press the Return key again when you have finished.

The system will instantly restart the process that controls the Touch Bar and it should work as expected again.

Show the function keys

Press and hold the Fn (Function) key on your keyboard to see F1 through F12 in the Touch Bar.

You can also make the function keys appear automatically when you use specific apps:

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Keyboard.
  2. Click Shortcuts at the top of the window, then select Function Keys from the list on the left.
  3. Click the add button (+), then select an app and click Add. For each app that you add, the function keys will automatically appear in the Touch Bar whenever you're using that app.

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Keyboard and complete one of these steps:
    • If you're using macOS Big Sur, select 'Show Input menu in menu bar' in the Input Sources pane.
    • If you're using macOS Catalina or earlier, select 'Show Keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar' in the Keyboard pane.
  2. Click the viewer icon in the menu bar, then choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
  3. Click the Fn key in the onscreen keyboard to make it show all function keys.

  2. Click the Boot Camp icon , then choose Boot Camp Control Panel from the menu.
  3. If you're asked whether to allow this app to make changes, click Yes.
  4. Click the Keyboard tab.
  5. Select 'Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys'.
